ABOUT ME

I have studied art at Tartu Children’s Art School (1984–1988) and Tartu Art School (1990-1994) and painting at the University of Tartu (1996–2000, BA and 2005–2008, MA). Since 2000, I have held seven personal exhibitions. I am a member of Estonian Painters’ Association and Estonian Artists’ Association.
PAINTINGS

Series „Trees“

I look at the sky and I see trees. The sky appears to me through the branches of the trees. The branches against the sky remind me of the roots within the ground. I have a thought that the trees somehow connect the ground and the sky and I do not need more to paint the trees.

Paintings: „Buds“, „Evening“, „Apple tree blossoms“, „Frozen apples“, „Old apple tree“, „Apple tree in winter“

Series „100 views of Ilmatsalu“

The paintings of the series depict landscapes with a view of Ilmatsalu. Ilmatsalu is the former collective farm centre, located close to Tartu, the second largest town in Estonia.

The extended title of the series is „100 famous views of Ilmatsalu and its vegetable gardens“, and alongside the series of Trees, it formed a part of my Master’s thesis. The title of the series was inspired by the series of woodcuts by famous Japanese artists: „36 views of Mount Fuji“ (Hokusai) and „100 famous views of Edo“ (Hiroshige).

One of the reasons behind using such a title was my wish to create 100 views of Ilmatsalu village in Tartu county, which would via the title automatically connect with the great masters of art history and such famous places as Tokyo (Edo) and Mount Fuji in Japan. In addition, it has a touch of humor in it. The motifs of Ilmatsalu, with their strange light and Soviet architecture, remind me of the scenes of the science fiction novels of the brothers Strugatsky, especially that of „Roadside picnic“.

Series „War and peace“

The series „War and peace“ is a subseries of „100 views of Ilmatsalu“ and depicts fantasy landscapes of Ilmatsalu in a contemporary war setting. This fantasy is not meant as a premonition of the future but to note that the boundaries between the time of peace and time of war are narrow.

Everything that seemed natural at one time might seem unnatural at another. A simple happiness might not always shine through.

The series “War and peace” acts as a reminder that nowadays, there is always a war going on somewhere and many battlefields are similar to those monotonous and common landscapes where the Estonian people go about their daily routine, with safety in their lives they take for granted.

The simple yet monotonous views of the time of peace can also be special, nostalgic and safe.
